James Nesbitt said he is hoping to convince Cristiano Ronaldo to return to Manchester United when he hosts the Ballon d'Or ceremony next month.

The Northern Irish actor is a long-time fan of the Red Devils and joked he would take a shirt with Ronaldo's name and number to Zurich with him for the event on January 11.

The Fifa ceremony, which crowns the best player in the world, will come at a time when the organisation is under intense scrutiny for alleged corruption.

But Nesbitt said he hoped the occasion could be used to remind fans across the world about the "purity of the game".

He said: "I'm a football fan and I think what it should be, during difficult times for that organisation, is a reminder of the purity of football - why grown-up men get paid an awful lot of money to play football and why they still play with the same passion they played with when they were boys kicking it around in a park.

"I was one of those boys kicking it around in a park, so hopefully I can bring some of that enthusiasm and simplicity of what we love about football to it, and maybe try and remind everyone involved about the purity of the game.

"Whatever has happened inside football, I'm still a football fan - my three big loves outside of my family are Northern Ireland, Manchester United and Coleraine, and I still follow them with the same passion as when I was a child."

Best known for his roles in Cold Feet and The Hobbit, Nesbitt has tried to help financially support his local team, Coleraine, when they faced financial difficulties. 

Asked whether his support for Manchester United would have him rooting for a Ronaldo victory in the Ballon d'or, Nesbitt said: "I'm taking a shirt with Ronaldo's name and number on it, and hopefully he'll put it on and get on the plane back with me.

Harry Kane’s second-half strike stole Tottenham a 1-0 win against Qarabag in the Europa League, to confirm qualification from Group J.

The Azerbaijani side made it tough for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, containing the Premier League outfit well but the England forward’s decisive goal handed the visitors all three points to confirm their place in the knockout stages.

Kane netted in his sixth consecutive game for the north Londoners and it came after heavy pressure from the visitors, who eventually found an opening from a set piece, Christian Eriksen’s corner was pinpoint and Heung-min Son’s flick on was delightful.

Kane could then convert from close range with 12 minutes left on the clock.

Before the game, Pochettino had bemoaned the schedule given to his side, as their Premier League clash against Chelsea on Sunday has been moved to midday. But Danny Murphy told talkSPORT that the Argentinean should have foreseen the long trip and planned ahead.

Pochettino’s men emerged for the second half livelier, Alli’s effort in the box was blocked before Eriksen pulled an 18-yard shot past the post.

Son's strike was soon tipped against the bar by shot-stopper Sehic before Alli hit the post with his half-volleyed effort.

It could have been one of those frustrating European nights but Spurs could sense an opening and it came after 78 minutes.

Kane rose to head home his ninth goal in six games when Son met Eriksen’s corner at the near post for a well-worked goal to steal all three points from a hard-working Qarabag side.

Elsewhere in Group J, Monaco were beaten 2-0 at home to Anderlecht.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp sent out a warning to the rest of the Premier League as he insisted his side can do better than they did during the 4-1 humbling of Manchester City at the Etihad.

The Reds raced into a 3-0 lead inside 30 minutes after goals from Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and an own goal from Eliaquim Mangala before Martin Skrtel scored a thumping volley at the death.

Having won 3-1 at defending champions Chelsea last month, Klopp has now taken maximum points from his meetings with two of last year's top four.

It was his biggest win since taking over seven weeks ago, and the Reds boss said it made up for the home defeat against Crystal Palace immediately before the international break.

"It was very satisfying. I'm not sure if it was the best (performance) but I rarely compare games," Klopp said.

"Two weeks ago we lost the game against Palace, now we have taken those points back.

"For us it is important we can see and feel there is a development in our game. We need common experience so we can work with it.

"We can do better than we did tonight - maybe not on the counter-attack because they were really good but we can start to believe in our own strength.

"At half-time I had a little bit of a feeling some of them were feeling surprised we were in the lead here and that is what we have to learn.

"It is normal in football if you have quality - and we have quality - you can be in the lead."

Klopp left £32.5million striker Christian Benteke among the substitutes, where Daniel Sturridge was named for the first time in Klopp's tenure after recovering from injury.

The German selected the majority of players he had to work with at Melwood during the international break and the link-up play between Coutinho and Firmino certainly proved that was the right call with the latter particularly impressive.

"I told you a few weeks ago I know about his quality," said Klopp of Firmino.

"He trained 10-12 days with us without interruption, the same as Coutinho, and that is the reason we played like this with the formation like this - we tried to put on the pitch as many players who trained together."

Harry Kane continued his red-hot scoring streak with a brace as Tottenham claimed an impressive London derby victory over West Ham to move within two points of fourth-placedArsenal.

The England striker now has 11 goals for club and country this season, with his double at White Hart Lane – a goal in each half – meaning he has netted in four consecutive Premier League games, while Spurs extend their unbeaten run to 12 league games.

Belgian centre-back Toby Alderweireld’s first-half header was sandwiched between the two Kane strikes, with a late Kyle Walker beauty capping off the rout before Manuel Lanzini netted an even later consolation.

But Spurs really could have scored about six or seven as Slaven Bilic’s side seemingly felt the full force of Dimitri Payet’s absence.

The French attacker has been the driving force behind the majority of West Ham’s best performances this season – including wins over Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal – and without the injured star they were outclassed and lacked any real cutting edge, even with the return of Andy Carrol and Diafra Sakho up front.

Tottenham dominated from the start, with Hammers stopper Adrian called into action early on to deny a fiercely stuck effort from Christian Eriksen.

The Spaniard’s gloves were all that stood between Spurs and a total whitewash at White Hart Lane, but unfortunately his errors equalled the number of his crucial saves, as a blunder saw Kane open the scoring on 24 minutes.

Hesitant defending and a fortuitous bounce saw the ball dribble through on the edge of the box to Kane, who stood off his man, turned and fired left-footed into the roof of the net. Adrian should have done better, with the shot sailing through his open arms.

To their credit West Ham refused to let their heads drop in those early stages, and they appeared inches away from an instant equaliser when Cheikhou Kouyate broke free and his ambitious close-range overhead kick rattled the crossbar, though he was flagged for offside anyway.

From then on in it was one-way traffic, and Spurs soon doubled their lead when Alderweireld scored with a bullet header from a corner. Again it was grim viewing for Hammers fans, with Andy Carroll inexplicably beaten at the near post as he failed to spot the Belgian’s run.

Spurs had a host of chances to effectively seal all three points before half-time, but were either denied by the quick hands of Adrian or the cruelty of the crossbar.

First it was Son Heung-min who went close, seeing his delayed shot well saved after a wonderful team move involving Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli, with recent England debutant Alli heading the rebound onto the woodwork.

And Kane was then left red faced as he squandered the opportunity to land the killer blow on the stroke of the break. A lucky ricochet off a West Ham defender allowed the England star to run through one-on-one, but he uncharacteristically shanked his shot horribly wide.

The hosts’ dominance continued after the break and it wasn’t long until Kane bagged his second on 50 minutes, although Adrian again should have done better as he seemed to dive over the striker’s low effort from 22 yards.

The pace slowed noticeably as Spurs stepped off the gas, but Adrian proved he was still alert with a fine double save to twice deny substitute Ryan Mason.

But the glovesman was soon beaten again as Walker romped forward from right-back and played a one-two with Son on the edge of the box, before nonchalantly stroking the ball home with the outside of his boot.

Lanzini gave West Ham fans at least one reason to smile with a 90th minute consolation, beating Hugo Lloris at his near post with a strong hit, or least he would have done if the away stand was not mostly empty as Hammers fans streamed for the exits.

It was not all happy news for Tottenham, either, as a fifth yellow card of the season means Deli Alli will miss next weekend’s clash with Chelsea.

Mooy comes into the crucial encounter in stunning form after delivering a long-range strike and setting up another goal in City's 4-2 win over Adelaide United last Thursday night.

The former Western Sydney Wanderers star has taken his attacking exploits to another level having led the goal-scoring charts in the FFA Cup with six goals, including a hat-trick.

Those feats have also translated to the international arena where he was found the back of the net four times in nine appearances for the Socceroos.

Mooy has enjoyed the freedom he has been given at City to push further up the pitch and to take the opportunities when they present themselves.

"I've got a little bit of a different mentality and I'm trying to effect the game more," Mooy said.

"The coaching staff really believe in me, but I've improved a lot since I was younger. I want to do whatever I can to help the team win."

The Socceroos are quickly building an abundance of midfield riches.

Canberra's Tom Rogic is hitting his stride after a long absence with injury, captain Mile Jedinak is a rock in the centre of the park and Massimo Luongo built on his credentials with a star turn at the Asian Cup.

Where that leaves Mooy in the mix remains to be seen.

He was below in his best in the Socceroos' 2-0 away loss to Jordan in October, but he wasn't alone in that assessment.

Former Socceroos captain Ned Zelic said for Mooy to take the next step in his development, he would need to close the gap between his best and worst.

"It's always hard to predict with Mooy because he still has these moments where his game really fluctuates," Zelic said.

"Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of his, always have been, I remember seeing him play for the Young Socceroos and I thought he was excellent. On the day, he could just explode and pretty much blow everyone out of the water."

Mooy's sublime form has led to speculation he could leave the A-League as early as the January transfer window.

Overseas offers are sure to come for his services, but Mooy said his focus was on helping City reach the finals.

"Every player should have aspirations to reach the highest level they can go," Mooy said.

"Hopefully one day I can, but I'm not trying to look too far ahead. I'm happy here at Melbourne City and I'm really enjoying it and I'm not feeling too much pressure."

Cristiano Ronaldo: I'm the best player in the world

Cristiano Ronaldo says he is the best footballer in the world and comparable with the game's all-time greats.

In an interview with the BBC sports editor Dan Roan, the Real Madrid forward said he had reached a level from where it is "not easy to improve".

The Portuguese, 30, is a three-time world footballer of the year, and Real's all-time leading goalscorer.

He said: "I don't need to say 'I'm in the history of football, I'm a legend'. The numbers say everything."

Ronaldo, who joined Real from Manchester United in 2009 for £80m, said he had reached an "unbelievable" level on the pitch over the "last eight years" and wants to continue playing for another five or six seasons.

His career record stands at 504 goals in 760 appearances.

"To improve more it's very tough. I just want to maintain because this is I think the most difficult part for a football player," said Ronaldo, who is also the Champions League's top scorer with 82 goals.

"In my mind, I'm always the best. I don't care what people think, what they say. In my mind, not just this year but always, I'm always the best," he added.

Ronaldo was asked about comparisons with Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi, a four-time world player of the year with 418 goals in 492 club appearances.

He said: "It's opinions, I respect the opinions. Maybe in your opinion Messi is better than me, but in my mind I am better than him. So it's simple."

Ronaldo joined Manchester United from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon for £12.2m in 2003, scoring 118 goals for the club in 292 appearances.

Since moving to Madrid, where he is under contract until 2018, he has scored 326 goals in 314 matches.

In the BBC Sport interview, Ronaldo also spoke about motivation, Manchester United and former manager Jose Mourinho.

United have not challenged for the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and boss Louis van Gaal has been criticisedthis season for their style of play.

Mourinho, now Chelsea manager, has come under pressure this season with the Blues 15th in the Premier League having lost six of their opening 11 league games

Dan Roan: "Is it sad for you to see Manchester United not quite at the level they were before?"

Cristiano Ronaldo: "For me it's hard to see that because it's a club that I love. Of course I want to see Manchester United at the level that it was in the past. Like, for example, Sporting Lisbon was my first professional club. I like to see the clubs that I like at the top and I think Manchester this season is better, but I think they still have work to do to be at the level of six, seven years ago."

DR: "What possibility is there of you going back to Manchester United one day?"

CR: "As I say many, many times, the future nobody knows. At this moment I'm so glad and happy here in Real Madrid but the future nobody knows. I will say this answer all the time because the future nobody knows, but I'm good here. I still have a contract with Real Madrid and I'm happy here."

DR: "You've made a film [Ronaldo, released on Monday] telling your life story. What's it like being a footballing superstar?"

CR: "It's great. This has given me motivation to still work hard and better in my job but I have to say to be in my shoes is not easy. But I'm not complaining. I just want to say that. I feel happy. All this happens because of a reason. The reason is I'm unbelievable inside the pitch. This is why the people have so much interest on me. So it's as simple as that. I'm good, I'm happy, I'm motivated all the time. I'm very professional and I want to carry on like that."

DR: "You played under Jose Mourinho for three seasons here at Real Madrid. He's going through a tough spell now. Are you surprised by that?"

CR: "I'm not surprised because in football anything can happen. Of course, he's a manager that I was working with for two years and I know his potential. I know that not just him but Chelsea are in this tough situation. As a Portuguese man, I want to see the Portuguese at the top level all the time. So this is what I wish for him that he can go through this bad situation and make Chelsea fans happy because they deserve it."
