| Alex Mowatt’s stunning long-range strike helped Leeds secure a first win under Steve Evans, when they beat Cardiff 1-0 at Elland Road.
The Whites faced a Cardiff side who they have struggled to beat in recent years, with their last victory against the Bluebirds coming way back in 1984.
With captain Sol Bamba suspended and Tom Adeyemi ineligible against his former club, Evans was forced into making changes for the visit of Russell Slade’s men.
An uneventful first half saw Leeds gather momentum before the break, with forward Chris Wood shooting wide before his glancing header should have beaten goalkeeper David Marshall.
Cardiff grew into the game in the early moments of the second half, before Mowatt’s moment of quality proved decisive. Mowatt found himself 25 yards out with no real options, so the 20-year-old academy product arrowed a 25-yard thunderbolt past Marshall, who could only watch it sail past him.
Wood found himself one-on-one and he rounded the goalkeeper before firing into the side-netting and Cardiff continued to press, but the Whites held on for their first home win since March.
Elsewhere, a late goal sealed three points for Hull, to put them top of the Championship with a 2-0 victory over Brentford.
There were few first-half chances before the game came to life in the 63rd minute, as Andrew Robertson put CIty ahead from a narrow angle.
With the match tight at Griffin Park, Harry Maguire’s desperate shot was spilled by David Button and Sam Clucas followed up to fire home after 87 minutes, to put the Tigers joint-top.
Early pace-setters Brighton stayed level on points with Steve Bruce’s side, as they drew their third consecutive game, this time in a 0-0 contest at Sheffield Wednesday.
Andre Gray showed his worth at Burnley, as the £9million striker netted twice in Burnley’s 3-1 win over Fulham.
Gray, who signed from Brentford in the summer, scored a brace for the third match running before Ross McCormack continued his good form when he pulled one back for the Cottagers. Matt Taylor’s late strike secured the win, moving the Clarets up to second.
Summer signing Stewart Downing scored his third goal since returning to Middlesbrough, as they beat Neil Redfearn’s bottom side Rotherham 1-0.
Derby’s momentum under Paul Clement continued when Andreas Weimann’s second-half goal gave them an eighth win in ten matches, beating Chris Ramsey’s QPR 1-0 at the iPro Stadium.
Strugglers Bristol City and MK Dons opened up the gap between the relegation places with 1-0 wins over Wolves and Charlton respectively.
Sixth-place Birmingham extended their winless run to three matches as Gary Rowett’s men were held 0-0 at home to Blackburn.
Reading are without a win in four matches now, after their 2-2 draw with Huddersfield Town at the Madjeski. The Royals came from behind twice, with Oliver Norwood and Ola John on target for the hosts. Jamie Paterson and Nahki Wells netted for the Terriers, who host Leeds in a West Yorkshire derby on Saturday.
18-year-old Arsenal loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored his first professional goal for Ipswich, as his and Brett Pittman’s strikes helped the Tractor Boys to a 2-0 victory at home to out-of-form Bolton.
And finally, Eoin Doyle’s second-minute strike proved enough as Preston defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0.
