Arsenal were humbled at the Allianz Arena by Bayern Munich, as the Germans ran rampant in the first half of Wednesday’s Champions League clash.

The Gunners won the reverse fixture 2-0 but found themselves 3-0 down at half time after goals from Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and David Alaba.
And it was more of the same after the break as Arjen Robben scored with his first touch before Olivier Giroud acrobatically pulled a goal back for Arsenal.
Olympiakos beat Dinamo Zagreb in Group F’s other game meaning Arsenal, who can just about still qualify, remain third with three defeats from four matches.
Arsenal’s game plan for the evening was immediately clear as they tried to launch counter-attack after counter-attack with a series of quick passing involving Giroud, Joel Campbell and Mesut Ozil.
But in the tenth minute Gabriel Paulista, in for Laurent Kosielney, made a poor decision to play Lewandowski offside but was too slow leaving the Polish striker with a free header to give Bayern the lead.
Mesut Ozil thought he had brought Arsenal level only 90 seconds later but it was ruled out by the touchline official for an alleged handball by the German as he finished.
It was a controversial decision but it looked to be correct as Ozil – booked for his actions – appeared to have deliberately used his forearm to turn the ball in.
The match tempo was relentless with Bayern searching for a second, and they would have got it if not for Petr Cech who did brilliantly to save twice from Lewandowski – the first a curling effort and the second a point blank header.
Kingsley Coman – a winger on loan from Juventus – weaved his way into the area before being tackled by Campbell with the referee waving away any penalty claims, although replays showed Arsenal were lucky to get away with it.
Another defensive lapse from Arsenal led to the second goal as a Philipp Lahm’s cross caused a series of air-kicks from Gunners defenders before the ball fell to Muller who fired in, via a slight Per Mertesacker deflection.
Cech again kept his side in the game on the stroke of half time with an instinctive reaction save as Muller’s stabbed shot was heading for the top corner.
However, there was nothing he could do about the third as Alaba robbed Santi Cazorla for the ball before unleashing a stunning left-footed strike leaving a tired Arsenal 3-0 down as they trudged in at the break.
It got worse for the Gunners just before the hour mark as Robben, only seconds after coming on, scored with his first touch, turning in Alaba’s low cross at the front post.
With 20 minutes remaining, Arsenal pulled a goal back as Giroud acrobatically scored with a well taken scissor kick past Manuel Neuer, however it was nothing more than damage limitation.
Even the most optimistic of Gunners would not have believed it was the start of a comeback and despite snuffing out two guilt-edge Robben chances, Muller grabbed his second of the night after a stunning run by Douglas Costa to make it 5-1.
